The Sarawak government is taking steps to increase renewable energy adoption and make solar power more accessible for homeowners. The Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme in Sarawak allows households to generate their own clean energy while offsetting electricity costs by exporting excess solar power back to the grid. If you're a Sarawak resident considering solar, this guide breaks down what NEM means for you and how to apply.

Hornbill Solar is Borneo's neighbourhood solar partner. Backed by Progressture Solar, we offer comprehensive clean energy solutions that are accessible and beneficial to all. Based on our experience of East Malaysia's renewable energy sector, here's your guide to Sarawak's NEM program.

What is NEM?

In Sarawak, the Net Energy Metering (NEM) program allows homeowners to install solar PV systems and use solar energy to power their homes first. Any extra electricity that isn't used is sent back to the grid in exchange for bill credits, helping to lower monthly electricity costs.

With NEM, your electricity meter records both the power you consume from the grid and the excess solar energy you export. At the end of each billing cycle, the exported energy is deducted from your total electricity bill, meaning you pay less while maximising your solar savings.

Unlike the Self-Consumption (SELCO) program in Sabah, where all solar energy generated must be used immediately, NEM allows you to earn credits for unused solar energy, making it a more cost-effective option for Sarawak homeowners.

How Can Sarawak Homeowners Apply for NEM?

  1. Engage a registered solar PV service provider

Work with a certified solar provider like Hornbill Solar to assess your home's energy usage. All NEM applications must then be submitted by the appointed Sarawak Energy Registered Contractor on behalf of their client to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Service Counter [1].

  1. Get a Connection Charges release letter

  1. Testing and commissioning

Are There Any Requirements or Limitations for NEM?

Before applying for NEM in Sarawak, homeowners should consider the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be connected to the Sarawak Energy Grid System

  • Applicant with outstanding bills of more than two months and/or pending meter tampering case will not be eligible for the scheme

  • The resource for electricity generation shall be from the solar PV system only, with no form of energy storage allowed
