The Sabah government is actively promoting renewable energy adoption, with a strong focus on solar power. One of the key initiatives is the Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System For Self Consumption Programme In Sabah (SELCO – PV SABAH), launched by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS). This scheme allows homeowners and businesses to generate their own solar power with an indirect connection to Sabah's utility system. To see how you can apply for SELCO, click here.

Hornbill Solar is Borneo's neighbourhood solar partner. Backed by Progressture Solar, we offer comprehensive clean energy solutions that are accessible and beneficial to all. Based on our experience of East Malaysia's renewable energy sector, here's your guide to Sabah's SELCO program.

What is SELCO?

SELCO - PV SABAH is a program that enables consumers to install solar PV systems for self-use, reducing reliance on grid electricity and lowering electricity bills [1]. Unlike the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme available in other regions, SELCO - PV SABAH does not allow users to export excess energy back to the grid.

Under this scheme, consumers install grid-connected solar PV systems on their rooftops or premises. The electricity generated is used directly by the household or business, subsequently lowering their utility electricity bills. Since excess electricity generated is not fed back into the grid, consumers should size their system appropriately to match their energy needs.

How Can Homeowners Apply for SELCO - PV SABAH?

To apply for SELCO - PV SABAH, follow these steps:

  1. Engage a registered solar PV service provider

Work with a certified solar provider like Hornbill Solar to understand how much electricity your premises uses. This information is essential to determine the right size for your solar PV system. The service provider will then guide you through the rest of the process.

  1. Get a feasibility assessment before application submission

  1. Obtain approval and start the installation process

Are There Any Requirements or Limitations for SELCO - PV SABAH?

A few criteria must be met before homeowners can apply for SELCO - PV SABAH:

  • Consumer must not have installed any grid-connected solar PV installation under previous solar initiatives, such as the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT)

  • The maximum solar PV capacity allowed for installation will be 85% of the load demand of the premise
