What you need to know

Eligible Sarawak Energy domestic customers can receive RM8,000 for an approved 2–3.5 kWac system, RM10,000 for above 3.5–6 kWac, or RM12,000 for above 6–50 kWac. The scheme is for qualifying new landed-home installations, is limited to one subsidy per SESCO account owner, and is first-come, first-served within the programme allocation.

Key takeaways

  • The subsidy tier depends on approved AC system size—not merely the size quoted by an installer.
  • A new NEM contract must fall within the published 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026 window.
  • Published smart-meter costs are RM500 for single phase and RM1,000 for three phase.
  • Sarawak Energy’s FAQ estimates payback at roughly 6–8 years after subsidy, but each home needs its own model.

01

What are the three Sarawak subsidy tiers?

The support increases with approved system capacity: RM8,000 from 2 to 3.5 kWac, RM10,000 above 3.5 to 6 kWac, and RM12,000 above 6 to 50 kWac. The final tier follows the capacity approved by Sarawak Energy.

The biggest subsidy is not automatically the best deal. A household with modest consumption may achieve a better return with a smaller net investment. Compare total installed cost after subsidy, annual generation and expected bill reduction at each suitable size.

02

Who is eligible?

The published scheme is for domestic-tariff customers applying for a new solar installation on a landed residential property. It excludes a property that already came with a solar PV system, and the subsidy can only be claimed once by the SESCO contract account owner.

  • Domestic Sarawak Energy account and landed residential property.
  • New qualifying rooftop PV installation.
  • No previous subsidy under the scheme for the account owner.
  • Installation by the required competent and registered parties.
  • Approved allocation still available when the claim is processed.

03

How does the claim process work?

For new applications, the subsidy is applied for after the installation is complete and the new NEM contract is signed. Sarawak Energy’s FAQ says the subsidy form is valid for seven days, so bank and customer information should be ready before that point.

Payment is stated to occur within 14 days after both the valid subsidy form is submitted and the PV meter is installed, whichever happens later. The project schedule therefore needs to connect design, installation, contract, metering and claim steps without gaps.

04

What does Sarawak NEM do to the bill?

The home uses available solar and the required meters account for generation and grid exchange. Bill treatment follows the approved NEM arrangement. The economic result depends on household consumption, the tariff, roof yield and the final approved system.

Sarawak Energy’s own FAQ provides a broad payback estimate of about 8–11 years before subsidy and 6–8 years after subsidy. Treat that as an orientation range, not a guarantee for every roof.
